Cherokee Rose fruit (Fructus Rosae Laevigatae) Jin Ying Zi

Spermatorrhea, premature ejaculation, incontinence of urine or frequent urination due to Kidney deficiency*

Supplemented Shui Lu Er Xian Dan (qian shi, jin ying zi, nu zhen zi, 15g each; wu wei zi, shan yu rou, 10g each; tu si zi 12g; lian xu 10g; dang gui 10g; bai shao 10g; zhi gan cao 6g) was effective in treating spermatorrhea, impotence, premature ejaculation, irregular menstruation and leukerrhea, etc..*

Proteinuria due to chronic nephritis*

qian shi, shan yao, 30g each; jin ying zi, huang qi, bai he, huang jing, wu mei tan, 15g; bai zhu, fu ling, 12g; shan zha rou, pi pa rou, 10g each; shui zhi powder 3g (taken with water), tu si zi 20g. The formula was modified according to accompanied symptoms to treat 37 cases of proteinuria due to chronic nephritis, and 31 cases were completely relieved, 1 basically relieved and 5 ineffective.*

Seminal emission, premature ejaculation, frequent urination*

yi zhi ren, tu si zi, shan yao, 12g each; wu yao 10g; bi xie 15g; qian shi 12g; jin ying zi 12g; dang gui, bai shao, zhi gan cao 10g each. 1 dose every day, water decoction. The method could be used in patients with seminal emission, premature ejaculation, frequent urination, impotence and prostatic hyperplasia due to Kidney deficiency.1 *

Cimicifuga rhizome (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) Sheng Ma

Effects on the smooth muscle*

sheng ma could inhibit isolated intestines and pregnant uterus, but it showed excitatory effect on unpregnant uterus and bladder.1*

Alpinia fruit (Fructus Alpiniae Oxyphyllae) Yi Zhi Ren

Chylous urine

yi zhi ren, wu yao, shi chang pu, shi lian zi, 15g each; zhu ling, ze xie, bai zhu, 12g each; gan cao 6g. With fatigue, add ren shen, huang qi, gou qi, qian shi; with dry mouth, yellow tongue fur and difficult urination, add huang bo, zhi zi, hua shi and chi xiao dou; with blood urine, add pu huang tan, ou jie, bai mao gen; with lumbar pain, add gou ji, sang ji sheng. 1 dose every day, 5~10 days as a course of treatment. 125 cases of chylous urine were treated, after 1~3 courses, 113 were cured, 9 improved and 3 ineffective.*

Cordyceps mycelium (Cordyceps Sinensis) Dong Chong Xia Cao

Renal diseases

Chen Yiping et al. reported the effects of treating 30 cases of chronic renal failure with Jin Shui Bao (a product made from Cordyceps). After one month’s treatment, the patients’ renal function was improved significantly, which was manifested as obviously decreased creatinine and urea nitrogen in the blood compared with those before treatment, increased creatinine clearance and hemoglobin. Natural Cordyceps and other cultured Cordyceps preparation (Zhi Ling Capsule) had certain effects too. Shen Lingmei treated 18 cases of chronic nephritis with cultured Cordyceps, it was observed that the renal function was improved and urine protein decreased obviously.1 *

Cured Rehmannia root (Radix Rehmanniae Glutinosae Conquitae) Shu Di Huang*

Diuretic Action

Intravenous injection of the di huang extract to anesthetized dogs increased the urine output per unit time; the action mechanism probably related to the cardiotonic action and dilation of renal arteries However, a recent report failed to prove the presumed diuretic action of the decoction and alcohol extract in rats The Rehmannia and Six Herbs Compound (Rhizoma Rehmanniae Praeparata, Fr.uctus Corni, Rhizoma Dioscorea, Cortex Moutan, Rhizoma Alimatis, and Poria in proportion of 8:4:4:3:3:3 prepared as decoction), given to rats with renal hypertension at the dose of 1.5 g/kg daily for 6 days per week, significantly lowered blood pressure, improved renal.function and decreased the mortality rate of the animals.1*

Asiatic Cornelian Cherry fruit (Fructus Corni Officinalis) Shan Zhu Yu

Diuretic effect and function of lowering blood pressure*

Liquid extract of shan zhu yu has diuretic effect on anesthetized dog and can also lower blood pressure.*

Prostatic hyperplasia*

Tong Qian Tang (experiential formula): shu di, shan zhu yu, 12g each; rou gui, bai zhu, chuan shan jia, dang gui, niu xi, hai zao, kun bu, wang bu liu xing, 10g each; fu ling 20g; ze xie 15g. Modify the formula according to TCM differentiation. 1 dose every day, water decoction. After 30~60 days’ treatment, 48 out of 52 cases were effective.1*

Panax Ginseng root (Radix Panax Ginseng) Ren Shen

Chylous urine

Lycium fruit (Fructus Lycii Chinensis) Gou Qi Zi

Urinary stone*

Yi Shen Tong Lin Tang: huang qi, tu si zi, wu wei zi, gou qi, yin yang huo, wu mei, niu xi, jin qian cao, hai jin sha, ji nei jin, dong kui zi, chi shao, hua shi, tao ren, hong hua, etc.. Water decoction, 1 dose every day, 1 month as a course of treatment, 2~3 courses totally. 137 cases of urinary stone were treated and 118 were effective.1*

Sweetflag leaf (Herba Acori Graminei) Chang Pu Ye

Chyluria

yi yi ren, shan yao, bian dou, qian shi, bi xie and shi chang pu of equal amount were grounded into powder, 15g daily, taken with water. Modify the formula according to accompanied symptoms. Among 43 treated cases of chyluria, 40 were cured and 3 ineffective.*

Chylous urine

Poria sclerotium (Sclerotium Poriae Cocos) Fu Ling

Chylous urine due to filariasis*

ku shen 20g; bing lang, di long, bi xie, hai zao, 10g each; shan zha, 30g; fu ling, che qian zi, 15g each; water decoction. The preparation may be changed to honeyed pill after symptoms disappeared.*

Formula consisting of che qian cao, shan zha, fu ling, bi xie, bing lang, di long and hai zao was used to treat 32 cases of chylous urine in the late stage of filariasis, 1 dose daily, 15 days as a course of treatment. 20 cases were cured, 8 markedly effective and 3 improved.*

Prostatic hyperplasia*

Sheng Jiang Yi Qi Jie Long Tang (che qian cao, huang qi, jie geng, sheng ma, dang gui wei, tao ren, niu xi, wang bu liu xing, fu ling, gan cao shao, etc.) was used to treat 34 cases of senile prostatic hyperplasis, and 23 were markedly effective, 8 effective.*

wu yao, dang shen, shan yao, che qian zi, 15g each; huang qi 20g; jie geng 5g; fu ling, ze xie, dan pi, 10g each. 63 cases were treated, 28 markedly effective, 21 effective and 14 ineffective.*

Urinary tract stone

ji xing zi, wang bu liu xing, chi shao, hua shi, ze xie, yan hu, yuan ming fen, gui wei, di long, niu xi, 9g each; fu ling 15g; chen xiang, gan cao, 3g each. Water decoction, 1 dose every day. After 5~15 days’ treatment, all 19 cases were effective.*

Urinary tract infections

Dao Chi San combining che qian zi, bian xu, fu ling, mu tong, huang qin, gan cao.*

Bu Qi Gu Pao Tang: huang qi, shan yao, 20g each; dang shen 15g; fu ling 12g; yang pao fen (powder of goat bladder), sang piao xiao, bai zhu, du zhong, 10g each; sheng ma, yi zhi ren, 6g each; wu yao, 8g. 1 dose every day, water decoction. It had therapeutic effect on 25 cases of urethral syndrome to different degrees.1*

Licorice root (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis) Gan Cao
